How to Tell the Sex of a Cat | Kitten Ads

Articlegeneral cat adviceThursday 07 April 2011
Cats are quite difficult to sex because they can look the same and even act the same after they are neutered or spayed. You cannot tell a male and female cat apart by its personality, colour, weight or size. The only way you can confirm the sex of a cat is to examine the genitalia. Once you know how to sex a cat it is extremely easy and can be done in next to no time.

It is important to be able to sex a cat if you are planning on buying one. For example you might already have a girl cat so need to ensure you purchase another one to prevent breeding. Whatever your reasons for needing to distinguish between a girl and boy cat this article will explain simply, step by step, how to do it.

    Sexing a Cat

  • The first step is lifting up the cat’s tail. You can do this one of two ways, the first is picking the cat up and standing it on your lap. The second way is to lift the tail when the cat is lying down.

  • The anus will look the same for male and female cats and you will find this below the base of the tail.

  • The part you need to look at more carefully is the area below the anus. You will see one of two things, you could see a scrotal sac which looks like a little bulge below it will be a small circular opening; this is a male cat. Alternatively below the anus you will see a vertical opening; if you see this then you have a female cat.

  • Be aware that if a boy cat has been neutered you will not see a bulge. You should be able to see a deflated scrotal sac with a small dot below it.

  • Identifying the Sex of a Kitten

  • You must be very gentle when picking up a kitten. Do not pick it up without the mother’s approval and you must never move it around by its tail.

  • You should leave sexing kittens until after the first three weeks as they are very fragile. The younger the kitten the harder it will be to identify if you have a girl cat or a boy cat.

  • Get a warm towel and place the kitten onto of it. Gently roll the kitten onto their back and lift up the tail.

  • If you have a female cat then you will notice the distance between the anus and the vulva is shorter than the distance between the anus and the penis on the male cat.

  • If you have a boy cat then you will notice a small dot below the anus.
