How to Make Leather Cat Collars

Articlegeneral cat adviceThursday 07 April 2011

Leather cat collars are useful for keeping your cat safe and reduce the risk of harm. A cat collar is designed to carry information about the cat and your contact details so that you can be reached if the cat goes missing. They are also a great way of personalising your cat so that they look how you want them to. A pet collar can make your cat look unique and stylish. See the following tips on making leather cat collars.

    •    Leather is the best material to make a pet collar from as it is comfortable and hard wearing. First, take a leather trim about 1.5cm thick and wrap it around the cat’s neck. Make sure that you can fit two fingers between the trim and the neck. This spacing should be no more and no less. We do not want the cat collar to be too tight or too loose.

    •    Once you know how much trim you are using, you will need to add holes for adjustments. From the left end, poke a small and neat hole with an ice pick about an inch from the edge. Then poke two more like this next to it with half a centimetre of spacing.

    •    Place a small metal buckle over the right end of the trim and fold over the end so that a loop forms. Sew this down with a needle and thread.

    •    To change the appearance of leather cat collars, you could add some charms or rhinestones in whatever colours or styles you want. Attach these with glue or sew them in.
