Articlegeneral cat adviceFriday 20 May 2011

Cat urine can be a very strong, overpowering smell that you definitely do not want your house to smell of. Male cats can spread cat urine to mark their territory and young cats can urinate in the house because they have not yet been house trained. This article outlines how to get rid of cat urine smell.

    Remove Cat Urine Smell

    •    One of the best things to use to get rid of cat smell is vinegar. Vinegar is excellent at getting rid of cat urine smell. Mix up a solution of three parts warm water and one part white vinegar.

    •    To get rid of cat smell, completely the saturate the spot using and old rag and the solution. You then need to dry the spot by dabbing it with a towel and then repeat. This works well to remove cat urine from hardwood floors, it will also work to eradicate the urine smell.

    •    You can use this method for removing the cat urine smell from carpets as well but it will require a bit more effort. Once you have saturated and dried the area, sprinkle baking soda on it and then mix up a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with a teaspoon of good quality washing up liquid.

    •    Pour the new mix over the baking soda and use a brush to really work it into the area affected by the cat urine. Use a hoover to clean up the area. This will clean up nearly all cases of cat urine and get rid of the urine smell.

    •    If there is cat urine on your clothes that normal detergent won’t shift, you can use a small amount of apple cider vinegar with the laundry detergent with the next load in the washing machine.
