Proud pet owners are being reminded to nominate their favourite felines for a Sussex charity's "cat Oscars".

Cats Protection is urging owners to get their nominations in for the National Cat Awards 2012 before May 31.

The awards, known as the "Feline Oscars", aim to celebrate real-life stories of companionship, bravery and heroism among cats.

This year's awards have been opened up to all cats living in the UK rather than just stray and rescue cats.

Categories include hero cat, best friends, most incredible story, outstanding rescue cat and celebrity cat.

The charity, which supports thousands of cats and kittens each year, is calling for celebrity cat suggestions through its Facebook page with the winner decided via an online poll. Winners will attend a star-studded ceremony in London in August with awards handed out by celebrity judges.

Peter Hepburn, Cats Protection's chief executive, said: "These awards highlight how cats make wonderful pets and enhance people's quality of life so it was important they were opened up to honour all the nation's cats.

"The stories we hear on a daily basis never fail to demonstrate the benefits cats bring to their owners and with around 6,000 fabulous cats in our care at any one time, Cats Protection can help you find your perfect companion."

The awards have been sponsored by Verdo Cat Litter, which has partnered with Cats Protection.
