Firefighters who were on a well-being check in west suburban Cicero found more than 50 cats in an elderly woman's home.
The authorities became aware of the situation when the water crews came to shut off the water for non – payment and they were overcome by the odour. Animal Control Officers managed to capture the cats by using special traps. Due to the very bad conditions in the house, the officers had to wear Hazmat suits. Over 50 cats that were found were in very poor health condition.
The neighbours knew about the woman’s obsession for cats and they were dealing for years with the smell. The woman who is in her late 70s is told to live alone and as the home has been closed and is uninhabitable according to the authorities, the woman is going to stay with her relatives now.
